January 6, 2014 – For the first time, the 26th annual Folk Alliance International Conference and Winter Music Camp will be held at Kansas City’s Crown Center hotels February 19th through the 23rd. The event coincides with the relocation of the Folk Alliance International headquarters to Kansas City from Memphis, TN.
The largest folk-related gathering of it’s kind, the 2014 conference will bring together over 2,000 registered attendees, including over 100 industry exhibitors, and of course, lots of music. Over 200 juried music performances, more than 300 private showcase events, and over 50 workshops, panel discussions, and peer group meetings discussing critical issues relating to presenting, promoting, and preserving folk and traditional music and dance. Folk icon Graham Nash is the conference keynote speaker on February 20, and former Vice President Al Gore will host his award winning presentation on global climate change on February 22.
In conjunction with the industry conference in Kansas City’s Westin Crown Center Hotel, the new Winter Music Camp will take place in the adjoining Sheraton Hotel. It will offer group and individual instruction, performances and jam sessions for all levels of players in all styles of roots music, featuring music legends such as Byron Berline, Mike Compton, Ken Perlman and others, including a keynote by Graham Nash.
The conference opens on Wednesday, February 19th, highlighted by a showcase of live performances hosted by Kansas City area media, including KC Cafe Radio. We will also host afternoon and late night Private Showcase events on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. All KC Cafe Radio-related events will be broadcast live, and available on-demand from our website. More information on our coverage will be announced here soon.
Recently, KC Cafe Radio’s John Dutton visited with Folk Alliance International Executive Director Louis Meyers, at their new headquarters and store in downtown Kansas City. They talked about the move from Memphis to Kansas City, the conference, and the future of Folk Alliance International in its new home.
