Art Podell’s Journey From the Village to the Canyon

Art PodellAs a musician, Art Podell has seen and done it all. From the rich and budding 50s-era folk scene of New York’s Greenwich Village alongside Paul Potash, to his trek to California where he joined The New Christy Minstrels, Podell has either been influenced by, or has been involved with some of the most familiar folk music heard or recorded.

Today, Art Podell continues that journey, with his album, From The Village to the Canyon – A Songwriter’s Journey,  A new collection of songs that reflect back on those days at Greenwich Village, Laurel Canyon, and more.

Recently, KC Cafe Radio Music Director Kathy Forste talked with Art via Skype about his musical life, and how they influence the songs on the album.  They also talk at length about his work with Paul Potash, his encounters with the likes of Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary, and the story behind the song “Puff, The Magic Dragon.”  Following the interview, Kathy’s conversation with Art continued, as they discussed his life at Laurel Canyon, as well as his thoughts on the music industry today.  We offer both the interview and the “bonus” conversation here.
