KC Cafe Radio Live @ FAR-West 2015: Saturday Night Showcase

Folk Alliance Region WestOur live broadcast coverage from the Folk Alliance Region West (FAR-West) 2015 music conference continues tonight with performances from the Official Showcase stage beginning at 8:30 PM (Central Time).  Tonight’s broadcast features music from Cris Williamson (Best of the West Award Winner), Spark and Whisper, Rick Ruskin, Jalan Crossland, Freddy & Francine, Dan Weber, and Susie Glaze & The Hilonesome Band.  Here is the schedule of the performances:

8:30 PM: Cris Williamson (Best of the West Award Winner)

cris_williamsonCris Williamson, the FAR-West BOTW Performer Honoree, has had a career in music that spans over five decades as a performer, activist and innovator. Born in South Dakota and then achieving her first musical successes in Wyoming and Colorado, the former school teacher reached national attention with the 1975 release, “The Changer and the Changed” on the independent label Olivia Records, the first woman-owned woman-focused record company which was her brainchild. This revolutionary album has long been cited as the beginning of a new genre of music that was primarily for and about women. Over the years Cris has continued to produce exceptional music, releasing over 30 albums and collaborating with luminaries such as Bonnie Raitt and Holly Near. Through all of this, Cris’ music and lyrics remain the vehicle for something larger and she is often featured in women’s studies curricula, teaching and inspiring new generations.

7:00 PM: Spark and Whisper

spark_and_whisperSpark & Whisper performances are intimate and dynamic, reflecting traditional roots and a modern perspective on life and love. They entwine their eclectic/electric pasts with acoustic treatments and reflect their perceptions of the evolving American cultural, political, and environmental landscapes, guiding the audience out of the mundane into moments of higher consciousness and connected spirits.

7:30 PM: Rick Ruskin

rick_ruskinRick Ruskin offers up an enticing musical buffet composed of unequal portions of original songs and cover songs served in his unique vocal style accompanied by lush guitar arrangements that sound as if there are five hands on the guitar, not just two. Listen with joy and watch wide-eyed as he entertains and satisfies any appetite.

8:00 PM: Jalan Crossland

jalan_crosslandJalan Crossland is a treasure, a treat, and a truth-bending singing storyteller. He’s one part national fingerstyle guitar champion, one part rodeo clown, one part rough-hewn cowboy from rural Wyoming, and one part ultimate showman. The other parts, and there are many, range from hobo to bad boy to jammin’ banjo slinger, and that’s just the tip o’ the iceberg.

8:30 PM: Freddy & Francine

freddy_and_francineFreddy & Francine is an explosive Americana/soul duo that tours well outside their home base in Los Angeles. They have a connection on stage that radiates infectiously through audiences. Their performances feature tight two-part harmonies and engaging songs that reach deep into hearts. With just an acoustic guitar and their two voices, they deliver a dynamic and engaging show.

9:00 PM: Dan Weber

dan_weberDan Weber is an authentic troubadour who began writing and performing only 7 years ago at the age of 40. In the short time since then, his songs which are rooted in real world vagabond life experiences, have won numerous accolades and song contests (including the prestigious Walnut Valley Festival, Woody Guthrie Festival & Kerrville New Folk competitions) and fans!

9:30 PM: Susie Glaze & The Hilonesome Band

susie_glaze_and_the_hilonesome_bandSusie Glaze & The Hilonesome Band blends classic folk music with rough-edged stories of tragedy and fate, with orchestral arrangements sounding like chamber music gone folk! This is a lush Americana folk fusion quintet presenting gorgeous blends of mountain folk and grassy, Celtic-inspired originals, all fronted by the distinctive voice of Susie Glaze and supplemented with sweet band harmonies.

KC Cafe Radio Live @ FAR-West 2015: Best of the West Awards

Folk Alliance Region WestEvery year during their annual Music Conference, Folk Alliance Region West (FAR-West) takes the time to honor individuals who have maintained an enduring presence in the folk and acoustic music scene in the West, inspiring others by embodying folk values and traditions.  Today, Far-West honors legendary performer Cris Williamson, house concert pioneers Russ and Julie Paris and performer/music educator Penny Nichols. KC Cafe Radio will broadcast this year’s ceremony beginning at approximately 2:30 PM (Central Time).

cris_williamsonCris Williamson, the FAR-West BOTW Performer Honoree, has had a career in music that spans over five decades as a performer, activist and innovator. Born in South Dakota and then achieving her first musical successes in Wyoming and Colorado, the former school teacher reached national attention with the 1975 release, “The Changer and the Changed” on the independent label Olivia Records, the first woman-owned woman-focused record company which was her brainchild. Through all of this, Cris’ music and lyrics remain the vehicle for something larger and she is often featured in women’s studies curricula, teaching and inspiring new generations.

Russ & Julie's House ConcertsRuss and Julie Paris are the BOTW Ambassador Honorees. While they didn’t invent house  concerts, Russ and Julie are widely known for hosting one of the longest-running and most-respected house concert series in the nation, the aptly-titled Russ and Julie’s House Concerts. They have held over 200 shows in their living room since early 1997, featuring some of the best-known acts in acoustic music and furthering the careers of many newer acts. While setting the standard for presenting consistent quality performances, they have also been key in helping to establish other house concerts in the western region and beyond and they have been featured in countless national and local articles, as well as radio and TV shows discussing the house concert phenomenon. Their influence on the western music scene also runs much deeper than just promoting house concerts.  They founded a website called AcousticMusic101.com to build community and share folk and acoustic music in the Southern California area. Russ and Julie were also members of the original committee that formed the Folk Alliance Region – West chapter of Folk Alliance International, which has become the leading advocacy group for acoustic and folk music in the western part of North America. Their tireless work behind the scenes as members and officers of the Board of Directors, has been instrumental in ensuring the success of FAR-West and in establishing its Music Conference as one of the leading music conferences in the country. In May of 2013, Russ and Julie Paris were honored with the annual “Legend Award” by the Topanga Banjo-Fiddle Contest & Folk Festival and FAR-West is thrilled to bestow a similar honor on them at this year’s Conference.

Penny NicholsPenny Nichols will be honored with a FAR-West Lifetime Achievement Award for her years as a world-class performer as well as an inspirational music educator. The Lifetime Achievement Award is only presented when the FAR-West Board wishes to recognize a person whose entire career and dedication has significantly enriched not only the FAR-West community, but also the folk community as a whole. The previous Lifetime Achievement Award was presented in 2009 to Faith Petric, a long-time fixture in the San Francisco music community. Penny Nichols’  amazing career began in the mid-60s as part of the Southern California folk scene where she shared stages with the likes of Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt and John McEuen. Her career continued in the San Francisco area during the “Summer of Love” and the late 60s when she opened for bands like Big Brother and the Holding Company, the Jefferson Airplane and Quicksilver Messenger Service at venues like the Fillmore, the Avalon and the Big Sur Folk Festival. It was in this time period when she recorded her first solo record “Penny’s Arcade” for Buddha Records. In the 70s, Penny was back in Southern California pursuing her songwriting and singing career as well as performing on many commercials and PSAs, eventually earning a Grammy nomination for her work as part of Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band. Eventually Penny decided to finish her education, earning undergraduate degrees in Music and Psychology and culminating in a Doctorate of Education from Harvard University, while continuing her performing and songwriting career at the same time. More recently, while continuing to write and record her music, Penny has become an in-demand teacher at music camps throughout the United States and she has established four of the most respected songwriting camps in America, SummerSongs East and West and WinterSongs East and West, inspiring and training the coming generation of singer/songwriters.

Nominations Far West’s Best of the West awards are solicited from the FAR-West membership, with the honorees chosen by the FAR-West board of directors.

KC Cafe Radio Live @ FAR-West 2015: Friday Night Showcase

Folk Alliance Region WestWe continue our live broadcast coverage from the 2015 Folk Alliance Region West (FAR-West) conference in Oakland, California, beginning at 8:30 PM (Central Time).  Tune in to hear live music performances from Nels Andrews, Berkley Hart, Rebecca Folsom, Ashleigh Flynn, Ragged Union, Alice Wallace, and The Bombadils.  Here is the schedule for the performances:

8:30 PM: Nels Andrews

Nels AndrewsNels Andrews sings dreamscapes and travelogues. His songs bear the stamps of the places they were written, from the dreamy expansiveness of the New Mexican high desert where his musical career began; to the offbeat frenzy of his time split between touring, starting a family and working as a chauffeur in Manhattan; and recently the misty surf-spiritualism of California’s central coast.

9:00 PM: Berkley Hart

berkley_hartBerkley Hart is Jeff Berkley, Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Award winner, and Calman Hart, amazing wordsmith and harmonica virtuoso. They have toured for more than 13 years supporting seven studio albums. They repeatedly dazzle audiences with masterfully crafted lyrics, stunning harmonies, and stellar musicianship. They also tell wonderful stories and jokes between (or in the middle of) songs.

9:30PM: Rebecca Folsom

rebecca_folsomRebecca Folsom possesses a spark of wildness – both strategic and playful. Her music explores all that shows up along the road of life: heartbreaks, worries, tumbles, and the redemption and liberation that come when we surrender to it. Her voice flows from lilting tenderness to fully liberated, unbridled 4-octave joy that opens hearts and gets people to their feet.

10:00 PM: Ashleigh Flynn

ashleigh_flynnAshleigh Flynn grew up in Kentucky and cut her teeth on bluegrass. Her latest record, produced by Chris Funk (Decemberists), contains tales deeply rooted in the American experience. Her music is true blue Americana featuring folk, blues, country and rock. Ashleigh is a festival favorite throughout the US. She has traveled the globe, peddling her wares and delighting listeners.

10:30 PM: Ragged Union

ragged_unionRagged Union’s hard-driving bluegrass is an exciting fusion of instrumental prowess with modern edgy (even bluesy) lyrics that speak to current issues (well outside the usual “Bluegrass Box”). Their shows are a mix of self-penned tunes, standards turned inside out or upside down, and obscure traditional tunes done in a fresh and innovative way with hair-raising harmonies and stellar musicianship.

11:00 PM: Allice Wallace

alice_wallaceAlice Wallace is a Florida native now living in Los Angeles. Her impressive vocal chops and stellar musicianship have earned her the respect of fans and fellow Americana musicians. Her songs reflect an authentic soul nestled in a young person’s enthusiasm and wonder. By the end of her shows, when she starts yodeling, the listener’s heart has been wrapped in joy.

11:30 PM: The Bombadils

the_bombadilsThe Bombadils connected in Montreal over a shared curiosity in Celtic and bluegrass traditions. Endearingly described by their fans as “chamber folk,” diverse influences flow naturally through an array of instruments including flute, fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and upright bass. Then there are the gorgeous harmonies. Sarah and Luke also have a knack for attracting inspiring ensemble partners to their mix.
