Life Is Good For John Roy Zat

For singer/songwriter John Roy Zat, life couldn't have him in a better place than he is right now. "I have worked blue collar and white collar day jobs, with people in many different parts of the world," Zat says on his website. "With some mileage on my chassis now and a lot of this planet traveled, I can say that music is one of Nature's laws. Everybody is moved by music. Everyone has a favorite song, or two, or twenty. One of my greatest joys is making music and sharing songs with people, and the more the better.."

Zat describes himself as "a singer, songwriter, fiddler, and guitar picker," He plays both classic American roots, folk, country and bluegrass standards, and also original songs. It's the original songs where Zat's talent really shines brightly. "I like songs that lift spirits, brighten hopes, make us laugh, and maybe cry a little," he says. "I want to celebrate love, mourn loss, ponder mystery, and especially have fun!"

Zat started playing guitar and singing in High School. He took up fiddling shortly afterward, and began writing music in his early twenties. His work has garnered the attention of the likes of music legends Caroline Herring and Kate Wolf, who recorded his words to "Midnight On The Water" in her second album.

Zat’s newest music endeavor are two albums. The first is simply titled Solo, and features Zat playing and singing all his music. The second is an album that is 10 years in making, aptly titled Collaborations. It features Zat playing his music with other musicians .

Recently KC Cafe Radio Music Director Kathy Forste spoke with Zat. They talked about his long career, how he got started playing guitar and fiddle, his musical influences and how he chooses the traditional songs he loves to play.

KC Cafe House Concert: John Batdorf

One of our most anticipated House Concerts to date was a visit from singer/songwriter and outstanding musician John Batdorf. He has written songs for well known artists such as America and Kim Carnes, and has performed with a variety of artists, including Rod Stewart, Motley Crue and Dwight Yocum.

Batdorf has also been a music writer and director for several television series, including Touched By An Angel, Promised Land and Darkwing Duck. His musical voice has appeared in several television commercials.

His most recent album is called One Last Wish.

Batdorf not only shared with us his original music, but spoke with us candidly about his career, the people that have influenced his life, and how those influences translated into the music he performs today. It was nothing short of a unique, intimate evening with an outstanding person and musician.

World5: A Band For The 21st Century

Not all that long ago, the idea of five individuals in five different locations around the world coming together to produce an album would have been impossible. Yet, for the members of the newly-formed band World5, today's advancements in global communication and technology has made the impossible possible. The result is the band's debut album appropriately titled Global Experience, due out May 1.

World5 is made up of Don Bruner, Steffen Goeres, Stephan Goessl, Raimund Breitfeld, and Roland Childs. Collectively, they live on three different continents spanning 19 time zones. from the United States to Australia. Distance did not deter them from tackling the project of producing an album, with each member recording his part of the music from his own home recording studio. While perhaps a little unique in their approach, World5 proves we truly live in a new age of musical discovery, and they are indeed a band for the 21st Century.

Recently, KC Cafe Radio Music Director Kathy Forste had the opportunity to talk with Don Bruner, lead singer and keyboardist for World5. Their conversation took place using Skype(r). the same technology used by band members on their collaborative effort

Don is a native Californian who has played with several bands over the years and toured the world. He is an award-winning songwriter who wrote the number one single, “In my Wildest Dreams” in 2000. He has also opened for classic acts like ZZ Top, Bay City Rollers and Herman’s Hermits, to name a few.

Forste and Bruner discuss his beginnings in music and how he was drawn to it. How the collaboration with World5 works, and why the five members work so well together even though they are several time zones apart.

AO Music Produces Award-Winning Album

March 17, 2012 – The songwriting trio of Jay Oliver, Miriam Stockley and Richard Gannaway, otherwise known as AOMusic, have much to celebrate this week. They received word from Zone Music Reporter that their most recent album, "…and Love Rages On!" was awarded the designation "Best World Album" in the publication's 8th annual ZMR Music Awards.

The annual awards competition is based on votes from broadcast professionals from around the world that report their airplay to ZMR. Qualification for nomination was based on the album appearing in the publication's Top 50 or Top 100 charts between December 2010 and November 2011. "…and Love Rages On!" ranked 5th in ZMR's "Top 100 Airplay Chart for 2011."

In reviewing "…and Love Rages On!," ZMR's RJ Lannan said, "The compositions by Richard Gannaway on stringed instruments and Jay Oliver on keyboards are first rate. The orchestrations are bold and vivid complimenting the vibrancy of the vocals as directed by Miriam (Stockley). The balance is superb. Also contributing to the recording are a number of choirs from around the world making this album a universal project."

Kathy Cisneros: Keeping Dreams Alive

If you have been listening to KC Cafe Radio lately you have no doubt been enjoying the unique, ethereal sound of Kathy Cisneros. Painting a melodic tapestry of music and emotion, Cisneros endeavors to soothe the listener with a soft, free-flowing style.

Conveying emotion is nothing new to Cisneros. She began doing it early in life when she took up an interest in poetry, which eventually led to her down the path of music. The rest, as they say, "is history."

Recently, KC Cafe Radio's Music Director Kathy Forste talked with Cisneros via email. Here, we get to know this unique and talented singer/songwriter.

Cisneros tells us about her influences and how they have influenced her soft rock style. She talks about her unique writing style, and how she uses the Internet as a way to collaborate with other songwriters. She is an author, and was awarded VH-1's Song of Year through their Save the Music Foundation in 2004 and 2008.

KC Café Radio: Tell me a little bit about your background in music. When did you start playing?

Kathy Cisneros: I have always been a writer. Ever since I was small I put my feelings into poetry to help me deal with whatever was going on in my life.

KC Café Rafio: When did you start writing?

Kathy Cisneros: I began writing when I was five. I remember writing a poem called “One” and reading it to my mother. She was so excited about how I expressed myself and she conveyed how proud she was of me and after that my pen took over my life.

KC Café Radio: What/when was the first song you ever wrote?

Kathy Cisneros: I have written so many songs for so many reasons. The first song that I ever really put music to was “Are You Real?” I haven’t published that song yet because I want the perfect venue for it before I do.

KC Café Radio: How would you describe your style?

Kathy Cisneros: I have described myself as Soft Rock Adult Contemporary, because my music doesn’t fit any of the “norm” categories. I wish and hope to create a category that is unique to my perspective on how I write and sing music.

KC Café Radio: Who are your favorite writers and how do they influence your style?

Kathy Cisneros: My biggest influence was of course and always will be Stevie Nicks. She touched my heart as a teenager and she still touches my heart today. I am so proud of who she is and how she became the icon for many of us who strive to produce our passions because of her.

KC Café Radio: What is your writing process?

Kathy Cisneros: I have worked with musicians who send me their music. I listen and feel their tone. If I can get into it, my lyrics and vocals just flow. Then we create a mutual masterpiece. More often than not, I work with my own software system. I write music based on the feelings I get from the music I compile. Often the music comes first and then the lyrics and the vocals create the story. By and large I have to feel it to even get into it or even write about it. Once I am connected to a certain sound, a song is born from my heart.

KC Café Radio: How often do you write?

Kathy Cisneros: Every single day for over (too many years that I care to mention) LOL

KC Café Radio: What comes first: music, lyrics, or do they happen simultaneously?

Kathy Cisneros: That depends. If I am working with someone else's music, I have to listen and see if I can even fit into it. If I’m not feeling it, it won' t happen. If I am doing my own thing, usually I create the music first and then build the story around the vibe I am feeling.

KC Café Radio: What is your favorite cut on your new CD, Just Imagine You?

Kathy Cisneros: I love the song “Dance With Me” , but I have received so many positive comments on the song “Without You” because of the ironic hate love factor! Go figure! LOL

KC Café Radio: Where was Just Imagine You recorded?

Kathy Cisneros: All of my CD’s are recorded in my own home in my self made studio.

KC Café Radio: How long did it take to record?

Kathy Cisneros: Lyrics come quickly and daily. Music takes at least a few days to create but perfecting everything to the standard I wish it to be can take months at a time.

KC Café Radio: What's your favorite song of all time by someone else? Why?

Kathy Cisneros: I guess I have so many favorites but of all time my favorite would be “Dreams” by Stevie Nicks. As a teenager, I felt that song so deeply that it got into my core and inspired me to become who I am today.

KC Café Radio: How did you hear about KC Cafe?

Kathy Cisneros: I heard about KC CAFÉ RADIO through Linkedin.

KC Café Radio: Anything else you like to add?

Kathy Cisneros: As old as I am, I still enjoy conveying my heart through my music. I wish I had known what I know now several years ago but it doesn’t matter. When you are driven to be who you are, age and time has no place in defining you. If I could advise those who wish to go down this road in their own lives I would say follow your dreams and never doubt yourself. You are the decider of your own destiny. You are the melody of the songs you write. You are the music that might be played long after you have left this earth. Follow your dreams, follow your heart and let your music be heard. You never know where it may lead or who you may influence to keep the dream of our music alive.
