KC Cafe Radio Celebrates It’s First Birthday

…And You’re Invited To The Party!

It’s hard to imagine that a year has already passed!  KC Cafe Radio officially launched May 28, 2008, playing music “…by real people, for real people.”

Now, we return to the place where it all began, Howard Station Park, at the intersection of Third and Main Streets,  in beautiful downtown Lee’s Summit, Missouri.  You’re invited to join us and celebrate on Friday night, May 29, from 7 to 10 PM. The evening will be celebrated with nearly a dozen Kansas City-area musicians performing their original music in a free, family-friendly setting.  If this year’s birthday party is anything like last year’s “launch party” you are in store for an evening full of great fun, great talent, and perhaps even a few surprises!

And if you are not able to make it out to the evening’s celebration, we plan to record the event in picture and sound.  If all goes well, we will be sharing the experience with you here on the website by no later than mid-June.

Performers appearing at this year’s celebration:

Jim Abel

Jim Abel writes and performs a unique style of folk and alternative music, including humorous and serious songs about love, friends, and family.  Widely acclaimed for his compelling music and intelligent lyrics, Abel plays regularly in venues across the Kansas City area and surrounding communities and has received significant coverage in print and broadcast media.  Abel released his latest CD, Thunder, in May 2008.

Kathy Forste

Kathy Forste started performing 15 years ago as a solo artist in Oklahoma, and she has played everywhere from Seattle to the Bluebird Café in Nashville. She performs her honest heartfelt lyrics and acoustic rock melodies throughout the Kansas City area and has written, recorded, and produced three CDs of original music inspired by her personal jouney of life, loss, grief, and healing.  Her latest CD is Home Fires.  Forste is the Music Director for KC Café Radio.

Nathan Goldman

Nathan Goldman is a talented acoustic singer/songwriter who is just breaking into the Kansas City music scene with his heartfelt and clever original music.  A senior at Shawnee Mission East High School, Goldman also plays guitar and sings vocals with the popular teen rock band, Mr. Fish.  Their CD, Soft Serve Assault, was released in 2007.

Harry Hewlett

Harry Hewlett grew up on a cotton farm in west Texas and now lives in the Kansas City area, where he writes, sings, and plays the guitar and harmonica. Last year he performed hundreds of shows at retirement homes, coffee shops, and other venues. His concerts are full of humor and feature original songs from his latest CD, Tahoka Daisy.

Kathryn Lorenzen

Kathryn Lorenzen’s original songs are folk/pop, sweet with an edge. She has been a long-term player on the Kansas City music scene.  Lorenzen might play electric or acoustic guitar, and the melodies will stick with you. From romantic to blues to family singalongs, she’s got it!

Rick Malsick

Rick Malsick has more than 25 years of experience as a musician, songwriter, playwright, and actor. He is an accomplished finger-style guitarist, playing mostly ragtime, jazz, and blues, with some sweet and slow tunes thrown in for good measure. Malsick plays regularly in the Kansas City area at a variety of venues, including bars, coffeehouses, and restaurants. His most recent CD, Athena, was released this spring.

John Mitchell

John Mitchell is best known for his original parody songs, which he performs widely throughout the Kansas City area.  He performs regularly in Songwriter Circle events and solo performances and has won awards in the Kansas City Songwriters Showcases of the late 1990s.  He has had numerous songs selected for the New Songs Showcase of the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. John has also played Stage 5 at that festival several times.

Lezlie Revelle

Lezlie Revelle comes from a family where music was the second language. Since she was old enough to walk and sing, she has performed in choirs, variety shows, theatre productions, coffee houses, fairs, and festivals.  Revelle blends her songwriting talents with a roots rock/folk feel, a buoyant personality, and an occasional Celtic flair.  As a songwriter, playwright, and poet Revelle shares stories of the human condition and the divinity to be found in us all.

Sara Swenson

A couple years back while Sara Swenson was picking out a new guitar to strum, someone mistakenly referred to her as “the singer-songwriter.” Rather than correcting the error, she decided to try and fulfill the title. A writer by nature, the self-taught guitar player unexpectedly found a new voice, penning tunes known for their honesty, intimacy and striking connections to the listener’s heart and personal experience. Swenson’s first album, a self-titled effort, was released in September 2008. She regularly performs her sweet and soulful songs at various venues in the Kansas City area.

Jim Thomas

Jim Thomas has performed in bands and groups throughout the South and Midwest, and has recently started writing and performing his own material as a solo act.  His easy listening, story-telling style incorporates both humor and emotion as he sings about life.

Duane Woner

Duane Woner has been playing music in Kansas City since the early 60s.  He plays bass in a number of bands and performs his original music in coffeehouses, bars, and outdoor venues throughout the city.  Duane’s music has been described as “mid-western alternative folk country rock with an occasional but seriously bizarre twist of weird and childlike humor.”  Guess that says it all!
