Kerry Patrick Clark: In A Perfect World

Kerry Patrick ClarkKerry Patrick Clark will quickly tell you that his amazing talent is a gift, one that he does not take for granted.  The opportunities he has been afforded over his life – from the guitar that inspired his father to teach him the gift of music, his years touring with the New Christy Minstrels in the mid ’80s, to the life experiences that inspire him to wear his heart on on his guitar strings today, there is no doubt his talent is indeed a gift.

It is fitting then, that Kerry takes a moment to produce an album that reflects on those experiences, and offers commentary on experiences we all encounter in our daily lives.  That is exactly what he does in his latest album, In A Perfect World.

At the recent 2014 Folk Alliance Region Midwest conference in Saint Louis, Missouri, Kerry took a moment from his extremely busy schedule (not only as conference registrar but as a performing musician at the conference) to talk with us about this latest project.  Prior to the opening of our Private Showcase room for the final night at the conference, he sat down with Music Director Kathy Forste and Artist Relastions Director Kathleen Coleman to share his thoughts.  They talked about the challenges of being a parent and husband, while also being an on-the-road musician, as well as his decision to make music his career.  Kerry reveals to us that art IS work, and that parenting can be an art form!  We also get a “sneek peak” into a new Christmas album that he plans to release next year.

KC Cafe Radio House Concert: Dan Weber and Avery Hill

KC Cafe Radio House Concert: Dan Weber and Avery HillAward Winning songwriter Dan Weber has been described as “The classic mid-life overnight sensation.” A gifted storyteller and inspired performer, in 2013 Weber won 3rd place in the prestigious Woody Guthrie Songwriting Competition and the Silver Award in the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest. Previously he was a 2012 finalist in the legendary Kerrville ‘New Folk’ competition as well as the 2010 Dave Carter Memorial Songwriting Contest along with several other national and regional honors.

An ex-Park Ranger, Weber follows the long tradition of songwriting legends, entertaining audiences with energetic performances and telling hilarious, true stories from the many roads he’s traveled. Songs from his debut CD ‘Ash and Bone‘ received accolades from American Songwriter Magazine, the Great American Songwriting Contest, and the UK’s Maverick Magazine said: “4 Stars: Has you hanging on to every word. That’s the touch of a true master craftsman songwriter, quite indispensable.”

The Victory Review magazine writes “Weber’s writing is as strong as any in the Contemporary Folk community. ‘Goodbye to Dad’ is one of the best original tunes that I have heard in a long time.” There’s also been recognition from DJ’s “‘Hank and Jesus’ is easily the best folk song I heard last year. It has a timeless and authentic ‘Me and Bobby McGee’ feel to it” and legendary folk troubadour Ramblin’ Jack Elliott said “I love Dan’s songs and he tells really good stories”

In 2014 Weber begins a new chapter: A full-length follow up CD with favorites like ‘Oh Woody’, ‘What I’m Lookin’, and ‘Crazy ALL Day’—a country-tinged anthem that is poised to be a breakout hit. The songs are heartbreaking, funny, rich in imagery, and full of life’s hopes and ironies. With them Dan Weber brings an authentic voice to Timeless Stories.

Family legend has it Avery Hill sang before she talked. Since then, drawing from influences as varied as the old-time jazz of Billie Holliday, the surf rock of The Beach Boys, and contemporary confessional songwriters such as Dar Williams, Avery has used songwriting to stretch her voice and play with the vast spectrum folk music offers. Her sensitive guitar picking complements the images of her honest and intentional lyrics.

Her first record, EP Fare Thee Well, released in 2012, was featured on Tom May’s nationally syndicated radio show River City Folk.  “This emerging singer-songwriter has a memorable, lilting voice,” says May, “and is already penning songs that could someday be classics. She is an extraordinary young talent.”

Avery wrote songs for ten years before signing up for Portland songwriting institution Matt Meighan’s workshop, Songwriting as Truth Telling. Putting on her iron skin, ready for critique, she was surprised to learn that this class was not about playing for feedback, but about listening for truth. “What I realized then,” as she shared in an interview with River City Folk, “and what I continue to realize more deeply is that the way we become better writers is by becoming better listeners.”

She is currently working on her first full-length recording.

Carey Appel: Music Born Out Of Life

Carey AppelCarey Appel began belting her melodic tunes off of her backyard balcony at the early age of three.  “Such a grown up voice for such a little girl” was most often heard.  Grammar and high school musicals abounded until a coach skipped over her for “Fiddler on the Roof”.  Carey gave up music during college and after graduating from UC Berkeley, followed in the family tradition of retail. She opened a chain of gift and home stores, though singing was always her first love.

With a personal life-changing event, this captivating performer and soulful storyteller returned to the music community in 2011 with her first album. “New Favorites”.  Her company, (aptly named Heather Road for the street she grew up on), produced the album of aurally seductive vocals influenced by Melody Gardot, Patti Griffin, Cheryl Wheeler and Judith Owen.

Teaming up with artist and producer Lisa Nemzo of Dream Wild Records -(Bonnie Raitt, David Crosby, Heart, Ray Charles, Hall & Oates;), her recent album was produced and recorded in Nashville in 2012.- “House of Cards” demonstrates Carey’s innate passion and musical finesse, a collection of diverse and riveting acoustic singer/songwriter and rock arrangements with a sophisticated folk flair. It is an intimate and compelling journey to finding one’s own empowerment – where listeners may even hear a piece of their own story woven into Appel’s candidly-written lyrics.

Recently, KC Cafe Radio Music Director Kathy Forste spoke with Carey via Skype.  They discuss the songs on “House Of Cards” and how they are salted with the story of her life.  Carey also shares insights into the people that have influenced her musical career, and those who worked with her on this most recent project.  Carey also teases us with some insight into her new album due out later this year.
