Who’s Zat? Why, It’s John Roy Zat!

John Roy ZattFor San Francisco-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist John Roy Zat, the play on words to the question of “who’s zat?” carries significant meaning.  It also happens to be the title of his latest album, which, as Zat pointed out recently, is an exploration through his rich history in music.

Zat grew up listening to, and becoming influenced by the sounds of the British Invasion – BeatlesStones, Donovan, Clapton, as well as the folk music of the likes of Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Simon & Garfunkel, The Byrds, Neil Young and others.  He found himself playing guitar in high school, and in college, impressed by the sound of American old time music, began taking up the fiddle.

After college, Zat took up a full-time life as a musician, playing with the likes of Asleep At The Wheel, Tanya Tucker, Kate Wolf, Nina Gerber, Queen Ida and Bill Kirchen, among others.  Taking a break from music to raise a family, and establish a financial career for himself, he would later return to music on a full-time basis.

John Roy Zat has released three albums, Solo, Collaborations, and his most recent album, Who’s Zat earlier this year.  Recently, KC Cafe Radio Music Director Kathy Forste talked with Zat about his life and career.  He describes how music has shaped and molded his life and his own musical creation today.

The Keller Sisters Deal a House Of Cards

The Keller SistersThe San Francisco singer/songwriter sister act is back, and this time dealing a House of Cards.  The Keller Sisters offer up a brand new album that is full of warmth, humor and harmony.  Their first album, Shine, released in 2012 quickly rocketed to the top of the Roots Music Charts, and they are looking forward to the same success on their latest album, House Of Cards.

For their second interview with KC Cafe Radio Music Director Kathy Forste, Sheryl and Kerry Keller talk about their album, their evolution as songwriters, and how they stumbled into the Americana music culture with their songwriting.  They talk about the busy life of full-time work coupled with a successful music career, the advantage of singing as a sister duo act,  and their musings on the future of Americana music, and their role in that future.

Doug Adamz: National Steel

Doug AdamzDoug Adamz is a dazzling guitar player, a soulful singer, and an outrageous harmonica player.  Add the insightful poetry of his lyrics and his terrific sense of humor, Doug puts on a show you’ll never forget.  Some of his songs are engaging stories, some are reflective and philosophical, sometimes he just gets down with the blues.

Adamz has three solo albums; “National Steel” taps right into the tap root of American music with 17 original songs performed on a National Steel Body guitar, except for one harmonica barn-burner.  The CD is solo except for two duets with Peter Rowan. “Bernardo’s Serenade” is a collection of very original songs including “The Authentic Skulls of Pancho Villa”. “Guitar Solos” is a unique and beautiful instrumental album of original works for solo acoustic guitar.  His music has also been performed by The Joffrey Ballet and The Kronos Quartet and used in major motion picture and television soundtracks.

He currently lives in the outback of Marin County, north of San Francisco, of which he has said, “Ain’t nothing between Tomales Bay and the North Pole but an oyster bed.”  He grew up in El Paso, Texas (“where apathy is the biggest problem, but nobody cares”) and has been unable to shake the musical influence of his formative years in that unique cultural environment.

KC Cafe Radio Music Director Kathy Forste recently caught up with Adamz via Skype.  They talked at length about National Steel and other recording projects, the “journey” of writing for music, as well as his own musical journey from the plains of Texas to California.
