Carey Appel: Music Born Out Of Life

Carey AppelCarey Appel began belting her melodic tunes off of her backyard balcony at the early age of three.  “Such a grown up voice for such a little girl” was most often heard.  Grammar and high school musicals abounded until a coach skipped over her for “Fiddler on the Roof”.  Carey gave up music during college and after graduating from UC Berkeley, followed in the family tradition of retail. She opened a chain of gift and home stores, though singing was always her first love.

With a personal life-changing event, this captivating performer and soulful storyteller returned to the music community in 2011 with her first album. “New Favorites”.  Her company, (aptly named Heather Road for the street she grew up on), produced the album of aurally seductive vocals influenced by Melody Gardot, Patti Griffin, Cheryl Wheeler and Judith Owen.

Teaming up with artist and producer Lisa Nemzo of Dream Wild Records -(Bonnie Raitt, David Crosby, Heart, Ray Charles, Hall & Oates;), her recent album was produced and recorded in Nashville in 2012.- “House of Cards” demonstrates Carey’s innate passion and musical finesse, a collection of diverse and riveting acoustic singer/songwriter and rock arrangements with a sophisticated folk flair. It is an intimate and compelling journey to finding one’s own empowerment – where listeners may even hear a piece of their own story woven into Appel’s candidly-written lyrics.

Recently, KC Cafe Radio Music Director Kathy Forste spoke with Carey via Skype.  They discuss the songs on “House Of Cards” and how they are salted with the story of her life.  Carey also shares insights into the people that have influenced her musical career, and those who worked with her on this most recent project.  Carey also teases us with some insight into her new album due out later this year.

Kerry Patrick Clark: His Story, My Story

Singer, songwriter and storyteller Kerry Patrick Clark has certainly had a lot of time to master the art of storytelling.  After all, his lifelong influences include some of the best: his parents, who encouraged him with his first musical instruments; musicians such as John Denver, Harry Chapin and James Taylor; and his work with the New Christy Minstrels.

And now, with 5 albums behind him, Clark tackles his most ambitious project yet – telling the story of Jesus from perhaps one of the most unique of perspectives one could imagine – his own.  The result is his 6th and newest album, titled His Story, My Story, which most appropriately launched during this Easter holiday season.  By connecting his own life journey to that of Jesus, Clark has put together a collection of poignant songs that we can all relate to, as we reflect on our own life’s journey.

Clark is also quite the entertainer, as was demonstrated during his KC Cafe House Concert (listen in here), on a recent visit to Kansas City.  There, we had the chance to experience first-hand the unique connection between story and song.

Recently, KC Cafe Radio Music Director Kathy Forste had the chance to catch up with Kerry via Skype.  They talked about what inspired him to produce such an ambitious album.  They also talked about the House Concert, and we get some insight and great advice from a masterful performer and storyteller on how to relate to an audience and draw a crowd in to your performance.

KC Cafe House Concert: Kerry Patrick Clark

Some of the best things about a house concert are the candid surprises that come along with the music.  For Kerry Patrick Clark, those surprises came in the form of stories.  Stories about his life, his experiences, and thoughts on all of the above, and on the world that surrounds us.

He also shared with us the stories behind his songs, and helped us all to realize there is often much more to music than mere sounds emaninating from the speakers.  It was a unique evening, and for those who attended, something that will not quickly be forgotten.

Here, we share with you the recording from that evening, featuring singer, songwriter and storyteller Kerry Patrick Clark.  Enjoy the experience!
