Special programs airing on KC Cafe Radio

KC Cafe Radio to cover SERFA, Kerrville Folk Festival

KC Cafe Radio is pleased to announce our first-ever broadcast coverage from two outstanding music events this spring!  Thanks to the efforts of our own David Hakan and his Gypsy Wagon Mobile Recording Studio, we will provide coverage from the 2019 Southeast Regional Folk Alliance Conference, May 15-19 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, as well as the Kerrville Folk Music Festival from Kerrville, Texas May 23-June 9.

The annual Southeast Regional Folk Alliance (SERFA) is one of the regional arms of Folk Alliance International.  Their annual conferences are held in the spring, this year in Chattanooga, Tennessee, bringing together artists, songwriters, presenters, DJs, and other music industry professionals.  This year, the conference will be held in Chattanooga, Tennessee, at the Chattanoogan Hotel.

Now in it’s 47th year, the Kerrville Folk Music Festival is an 18-day and night event held just south of Kerrville, Texas, in what is known as “Texas Hill Country.”  It has been instrumental in launching the careers of the likes of Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Robert Earl Keen, and Lucinda Williams.  Over 1500 musicians have appeared on its main stages over the years.

Tune in as David talks with both familiar and upcoming music talent appearing at these events, and we will get song or two along the way.  Listen for these conversations and performances throughout our regular programming on KC Cafe Radio Thursdays through Sundays between May 16 and June 9.  Archived recordings of the conversations and performances from that weekend’s broadcast will be archived to our website during the week following broadcast.

2nd Annual PorchFest Returns to Kansas City June 13

PorchFest KCA soft summer breeze flows through the trees high above.  Beams of sunlight dance between branches onto the grass and porches below.  And, as friends, neighbors and music enthusiasts from near and far stroll through Kansas City Missouri’s West Plaza neighborhood, the unique sound of original music fills the air.  On Saturday, June 13 from Noon to 5, that scene becomes reality as the 2nd Annual PorchFest KC returns.

According to program organizer Kathryn Golden, this event is promising to be even bigger, with over 70 bands slated to appear throughout the 20 blocks of the West Plaza neighborhood that make up the festival area.  Neighborhood residents provide the approximately 30 porches and yards from which the entertainment emanates, and food vendors bring their local delicacies to enjoy.  It all comes together for what can only be described as a neighborhood block party that everyone everywhere is invited to attend.

porchfestkc_2014KC Cafe radio will be set up with a stage at Rafter E Studio, located in the heart of the festival area, at the intersection of Fairmont and 45th Streets.  Our program will feature a showcase of local and nationally-touring KC Cafe Radio Performing Artists, including Larry Garrett, David Hakan, The Matchsellers, The Engineers, Chad Abernathy, Steve Sterner, and Neptune’s Car.  All of the music from our stage will be broadcast live on KC Cafe Radio beginning at Noon, Central Time. Our lineup is posted below.  More information on attending PorchFest KC can be found here.

Recently, KC Cafe Radio Music Director Kathy Forste spoke with PorchFest KC organizer Kathryn Golden.  They talked about the inspiration behind the national PorchFest movement, as well as her own inspiration for starting PorchFest KC.  Golden also shares details about the event, and taps into her experience with the first event to offer up some pointers for festival-goers this year, in order to gain the most out of this year’s event.

Michael Gaiter's Songs And Stories
Saturday at 8AM and Sundays at 5PM (Central Time)

KC Cafe Radio Performing Artist and singer/songwriter Michael Gaither hosts this weekly conversation with musicians discussing music, and the stories behind that music.  His "kitchen table" conversations are presented in a laid back, informative style that allows the program to focus on real-life experiences, rather than on presentation.  And occasionally, Michael takes his microphone on the road to music showcase events and performances, presenting musicians in their natural environment.

Michael has produced just over 110 episodes since its beginning in 2007.
