The 47th Kerrville Folk Music Festival is underway near Kerrville, Texas, and KC Cafe Radio is there to bring you a taste from the festival.  David Hakan is attending this year’s festival with his Gypsy Wagon Mobile Recording Studio, and is providing us with his recorded conversations with some of the finalists in the New Folk Songwriting Competition.

You can hear those conversations live over KC Cafe Radio weekends interspersed throughout our live programming.  The following week, we will post the archived recordings from the previous weekend’s broadcast.  This week, we present seven conversations that were broadcast over the Memorial Day Holiday weekend, the first weekend of the festival.

Our thanks to the musicians who took time out of their busy schedule to talk with us: Aaron Smith, Karen Dahlstrom, Kyle Donovan, Liv Greene, Lynne Hanson, Michael Braunfeld, and Nancy Beaudette.

David G Smith Puts the Artist Hat Back On

By: Maria Smith

Singer-songwriter David G Smith has music in his blood. He and all of his siblings started playing piano in second grade due to their parent’s wishes, but the singers love for music only grew from there. He taught himself guitar, which brought out a love for writing and singing his own music. His newest album First Love is very popular on KC Cafe radio for good reason. His music brings forth emotions that you didn’t know you needed to feel.

While Smith calls Bluegrass, Iowa home, he finds himself spending a good chunk of his time in Nashville. That is of course when he isn’t out touring, something he has been doing more and more over the last few years.

Recently, KC Cafe Radio Music Director Kathy Forste caught up with Smith via Skype. They chat about songwriter heroes vs. guitar heroes, co-writing and more.
