KC Cafe Radio to cover SERFA, Kerrville Folk Festival

KC Cafe Radio is pleased to announce our first-ever broadcast coverage from two outstanding music events this spring!  Thanks to the efforts of our own David Hakan and his Gypsy Wagon Mobile Recording Studio, we will provide coverage from the 2019 Southeast Regional Folk Alliance Conference, May 15-19 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, as well as the Kerrville Folk Music Festival from Kerrville, Texas May 23-June 9.

The annual Southeast Regional Folk Alliance (SERFA) is one of the regional arms of Folk Alliance International.  Their annual conferences are held in the spring, this year in Chattanooga, Tennessee, bringing together artists, songwriters, presenters, DJs, and other music industry professionals.  This year, the conference will be held in Chattanooga, Tennessee, at the Chattanoogan Hotel.

Now in it’s 47th year, the Kerrville Folk Music Festival is an 18-day and night event held just south of Kerrville, Texas, in what is known as “Texas Hill Country.”  It has been instrumental in launching the careers of the likes of Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Robert Earl Keen, and Lucinda Williams.  Over 1500 musicians have appeared on its main stages over the years.

Tune in as David talks with both familiar and upcoming music talent appearing at these events, and we will get song or two along the way.  Listen for these conversations and performances throughout our regular programming on KC Cafe Radio Thursdays through Sundays between May 16 and June 9.  Archived recordings of the conversations and performances from that weekend’s broadcast will be archived to our website during the week following broadcast.

Conversations from the 2018 Woody Guthrie Folk Festival

FAI 2018: The Interviews

Twenty-Eighteen marks the 30th consecutive year that Folk Alliance International has been celebrating folk music, its musicians and those involved in furthering the cause of Folk Music around the world.  That makes this year’s conference theme, 30 Years of Community and Song all the more appropriate.

This year also marks KC Cafe Radio’s 10th year of Bringing You The World’s Finest Original Music, and 5 years of bringing conference coverage to our airwaves.  This year, we continue the tradition of on-air visits with with old friends, as well as new relationships we have made.

David Hakan Sings to the Heart in Stone and Steel

David HakanSometimes the winds of change blow hard on a C harp, wail at the corporate towers and shake the roots of rock ’n’ roll.

Singer/songwriter David Hakan has lived through a lot of that change, and continues to sing about it to this day.  Along the way, he has skilfully crafted his refinement of the song and songwriting into something he now shares with others… Not just fans of his music, but other musicians as well.

A native of Kansas City, David grew up with music as an integral part of life.  His mother played piano, and exposed the family to all sorts of music. “You never knew if you were going to get opera or ‘Lovin’ Spoonful’.”  His older brothers were also quite musical, playing guitar and singing covers of Peter, Paul and Mary songs.  David fit right in, singing along with his brothers, and eventually on his own.

After years of performing his original songs in coffee houses, at folk festivals and other venues, David would go on to share his passion and experience with other musicians.  He formed the Kansas City Songwriters Circle in 1992, and has mentored many successful singer/songwriters in the Kansas City area.

David recently retired from teaching, allowing him to focus all of his time on his music.  The latest product of this change in his life is reflected in his new album, Stone and Steel.  David is also taking to touring, and plans on forming a band in the near future.

Recently, KC Cafe Radio Music Director Kathy Forste talked with David via Skype.  David talks about growing up in a musical family, performing on the “coffee shop circuit,” and the importance of music in our world and the impact it has on society.
